thisMoment

Social networking sites are ten-a-penny these days, and for the most-part there is often little to distinguish between many of them beyond user-base. However, a new site has emerged over the the last week or so which I’m enjoying so much I thought I’d blog about it.

It’s called thisMoment and when I first describe it you’re going to wonder what this fuss might be about. Well, it’s a site for posting about moments in your life. Doesn’t sound too different from a great many of the alternatives, but it’s the way that thisMoment achieves this that sets it apart.

Rather than being a site for posting what you’re eating for breakfast, it’s for marking the poignant moments in your life. The times you look back on with fondness or horror. It’s about how you felt and what you may have learned from it. And then it’s about sharing this moment with others through text, photos or videos. These are all displayed in a gorgeous scrolling window, with videos playing in place on the page. Pictures can be found by searching your Flickr or Facebook accounts, though these are only two of the many linked sites you can upload from. Add a location to top off your moment, and allow others to make comments on what you’ve written. You can also add other people to your moments and allow them to make their mark.

The expected options are also there, including the ability to keep your moment private or broadcast it over Twitter and Facebook.

I’m not sure I can do the site justice in this post, but take a look yourself and see what you think. There are some helpful videos on the site to help you get started. Personally, I’m hooked!

Today I’ve added a map page to the site to show the general route we’ll be taking and some of the sights we hope to see along the way. This is dynamic and will change whenever one of our group makes alterations to the map on Google.

Once we’re on our way I hope that I’ll find the time to make regular updates of our location, which will hopefully match up to the posts we make.

You’ll find a link to the map at the top of the screen, or you can get there by clicking here.

Something has been bothering me. In the grand scheme of things it’s nothing too major. But it’s such an irritating little thing and it could be solved ever so easily.

It’s widescreen iPhone games. This isn’t a dig at the games themselves, but rather at developers who simply haven’t looked at the design of iPhone properly before releasing their products. For the mostpart, developers seem to like having the game play in widescreen when you rotate the phone 90 degrees anti-clockwise. Why is this such an issue, you may ask?

It’s an issue because that’s the side Apple added the volume controls. And given the natural resting position of the fingers along the edge of the phone, it means you’re likely to inadvertently push the volume control whilst playing. Not only does this obviously alter the sound, but it also displays a big box in the middle of the screen showing the current volume level. So just as you’re about to score the winning goal for England, up pops this big black box because your finger happens to have slipped.

Why not have the game play rotated clockwise? There are no buttons or controls at all on that side. It’s not a difficult thing to do. In fact, as far as I’m aware from the limited experience I’ve had with the API, it would simply involve changing one little word in the code. If I’m wrong, please let me know. But I don’t think I am.

So why do you do it?!

You may have seen from the previous post that I’ve set up a new blog for the trip I’m going to be taking across the States. This info is syndicated from the other blog as the plan is to have a number of people writing for it, and I’ll be pulling my posts from it to add to this one too. Just so you know. :)

Hello. Welcome to the blog for our little trip across the USA. Given that this is a brand new site, I’m guessing there won’t be a great many people reading this first post. But that’s OK; we have to start somewhere. If you have managed to stumble your way across this blog though, I do hope you’re well.

I imagine much of what I’m writing here will at some point be repeated in the About section of the site so that future visitors will know what’s going on. But this is the plan so far.

There are currently five of us from various parts of England and Europe planning on taking a road trip across the mainland United States. We have nothing set in stone, but hope to go at some point during 2010. This blog will be used to chart our progress through the planning stages and then the journey itself, hopefully updated by as many of us who wish to. There will hopefully be photographs and videos of what we’re up to as well.

So although there’s not much on here as yet, subscribe to the RSS feed to keep up with what’s going on. You may also like to follow the blog on Twitter to be kept informed when we have new posts.
